Extreme weather

hot weatherExperts anticipate that climate change will alter the UK’s weather patterns potentially causing more frequent extreme weather events including sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow, heavy rainfall to extreme heat in the summer months.

Extreme weather of any kind brings challenges for our communities particularly vulnerable groups and the elderly.

That is why the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Local Resilience Forum has a Severe Weather Plan to ensure we are properly prepared to respond to severe weather incidents.

Consequences

Sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall for prolonged periods can lead to casualties and deaths particularly among vulnerable groups (e.g. the elderly) It can also disrupt essential services, particularly transport, energy and communications and put additional pressure on healthcare services.

The consequences of severe heat and heatwaves can also pose a threat to public health. In summer 2022, an estimated 2,985 deaths were associated with five periods of extreme heat in England.
